Ukrainian President signs decree on the termination of the Friendship Treaty with Russia
Gowidenews Report - The President of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko, has signed a decree on the termination of the Treaty on Friendship, Cooperation, and Partnership with Russia, reports the presidential press service.
“The non-renewal of the agreement with Russia should not be viewed as a separate episode, but as part of our strategy for a final separation with the colonial past and new road towards Europe,” emphasized the Poroshenko in the video commentary.
According to Gowidenews Report which says that the president and the other components of this strategy include a visa-free regime, an association agreement with the European Union, a Tomos for the creation of an autocephalous independent Ukrainian church, a withdrawal from the CIS, a constitutional enshrinement of the policy towards joining NATO and the EU, as well as creation of powerful, patriotic and professional Ukrainian army, support of the Ukrainian language, its own history and strengthening of national identity.
Poroshenko noted that this agreement was not terminated earlier, because it could be useful as a basis for Ukraine’s numerous claims to the international courts and other international instances against Russia as a violator of this agreement and the international law norms.
Last week the Verkhovna Rada decided to terminate the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Partnership between Ukraine and Russia from April 1, 2019.
