Trump Defends Presidential Pardon: ‘This Was a Fair Election,’ But Loser ‘Refused to Concede’

President Donald Trump defended his choice of a presidential pardon recipient on Tuesday.
The pardon recipient was chosen in “an open and fair election,’ Trump assured reporters at a White House press event. And, after conducting a recount, “The result did not change,” Trump said after the losing candidate for the pardon refused to concede.
“The winner of this vote was decided by a fair and open election conducted on the White House website. This was a fair election,” Trump said, announcing that “Peas,” not his opponent “Carrots,” had won the vote conducted on the White House website to determine which of the two turkeys would be pardoned from becoming a Thanksgiving Day dinner:
“Unfortunately, Carrots refused to concede and demanded a recount. And, we’re still fighting with Carrots. And, I will tell you we’ve come to a conclusion: Carrots, I’m sorry to tell you, the result did not change.”
The annual Thanksgiving custom of a president pardoning a turkey was started by Abraham Lincoln, when Lincoln’s son requested leniency for a turkey, Trump explained.
As is his tradition, the president dished out a heaping helping of superlatives for the winner:
“That turkey is so lucky; I’ve never seen such a beautiful turkey.”
But, as for the unfortunate loser, Trump simply commented, “That’s too bad for Carrots.”
