China Opens World's Longest Sea Bridge

Beijing, Oct 23 (Prensa Latina) China on Tuesday opened the world''s longest sea-crossing bridge that, in addition to representing a new record, mark a milestone in linking three important locations for its plans to establish a sustainable and open development model.
President Xi Jinping officially declared it on duty during a tour of one of the artificial islands of that link route among the city of Zhuhai -Guangdong province-, Macao and Hong Kong, the two special administrative regions that returned China by late 20th century.
The expected traffic of vehicles started this Wednesday, October 24, at 09:00 local time in both directions of the bridge, considered the most ambitious project in China and a contemporary engineering marvel.
In addition to automobiles and cargo transportation, a bus line will transport passengers from one end to the other side of the bridge on two-floor buses with license plates of the three demarcations.
Trips will be reduced from almost four hours to 30 minutes.
In the days prior the opening, the local press highlighted the positive impact of the work on China's plans to open up more to the world through the sea route of silk, a commercial way that seeks to link it with other continents.
The construction of the bridge began in December 2009, it required an investment of 120 billion yuan (more than $17 billion USD) shared among the liaison territories, 1.08 million cubic meters of concrete and 420,000 tons of steel, that is, the equivalent of 60 Eiffel Towers.
